• 5-Day Deepening and extending the Heart of Wisdom and Kindness Silent Retreat 18th-23rd March

The Spring Silent Retreat is orientated around compassion and the natural deepening of our practice with mindfulness, investigation, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity.

Rather than cultivating new abilities, with compassion we learn to identify, appreciate, and strengthen ones we already have. In our meditation practice they support finding a place of balance and in our daily lives, a wholehearted involvement with what we are doing.

The retreat is not just about coming together to practice in person, it is more about becoming aware of togetherness through practice.

  • Our very special Country House Hotel close to the Mediterranean sea

The retreat is held at a favorite venue of ours, the Hotel Tossal d'Altea. This tiny, family run country house hotel is a 300-year old converted farm and olive mill, set in peaceful surroundings at the edge of the picturesque town of Altea famous for its blue domed church, cobbled streets and Mediterranean promenade. The purpose built meditation room sits in the garden with huge windows facing the mountains.

For those booking the retreat with accommodation, the spacious rooms are well equipped with double or twin beds, air-conditioning, WiFi, safety deposit box, mini fridge, TV and a daily maid service. Every room has a private ensuite bathroom with bathrobes, towels, hairdryer and complimentary Oliva del Mediterraneo toiletries.

Our nearest airport is Alicante which has a transfer service available, and, as we never ask (nor expect) you to share rooms unless you bring a friend, you’ll have your own double bedroom with private bathroom. You can also join the silent retreat as a non-resident.

  • The Art of Stillness!

The silent retreat schedule includes periods of both guided and sustained periods of silence to enable participants to connect more fully with their inner experience. There will also be opportunities for mindful walking down to the beach to see the sun rise (weather permitting) and a longer walk on one of the days to explore the coastline.

The schedule has been crafted to give plenty of time to practice mindfulness informally and nourish yourself between the scheduled sessions with walks along the Mediterranean coast and the promenade which will take you to the neighbouring town of Albir and the lighthouse with stunning coastal views, sipping a tea or coffee or curling up with a book. It is also possible to hire bikes to explore the area.

There will be the opportunity for group inquiries and the teachers will also be available to talk to people individually if necessary.

This retreat is suitable for people who teach or are training to teach Mindfulness Based Programmes and others who are integrating mindfulness into their professional work. It will enable mindfulness teachers who wish to be included on the BAMBA Listing of Mindfulness Teachers to fulfill the requirement to attend an annual mindfulness retreat.

This retreat is also suitable for those that have taken an 8-week Mindfulness-Based course such as MBSR/MBCT/MBC/MBCL (or similar) and who have a personal practice of mindfulness.

The silent retreat starts at 4pm on Friday the 18th of March and finishes at 12.30 lunchtime on Wednesday the 23rd of March. To allow maximum space and comfort and to meet current COVID-19 social distancing requirements, we are limiting the retreat to just 10 people, so early booking is recommended.

  • Booking, Vaccine and Lateral Flow Test requirements:

The safety and wellbeing of all, we are asking that everyone has received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, and sends proof of double vaccination at the time of booking. A condition of booking is also that you agree to follow any Spanish legal requirements regarding social distancing and wearing of masks (please see below)

About 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 do not have symptoms but can still infect others. Even if you’re vaccinated, there’s still a chance you can pass COVID-19 on, so we are also asking that everyone provides proof of a negative Lateral Flow Test taken in the 48 hours before attending a retreat. We feel this is the best way to minimise any ongoing risk.

Once we offer you a space (subject to availability) we ask for a 100 euro deposit. The balance of payment is then due by the 12th of February. Although we book the hotel accommodation if required, you pay them directly on arrival, allowing you to spread the cost of the retreat.

  • Important information and frequently asked questions

Question: What are the Social distancing and Masks requirements? (updated the 15th of October)

Handwashing hygiene, air ventilation rules and the use of face masks in enclosed public spaces and in some specific scenarios outdoors, must continue to be observed at all times.

It is currently not mandatory to wear a face mask outdoors where social distancing of 1.5 metres is observed. However, face mask use remains mandatory for anyone over the age of 6 years in the following circumstances:

    • In any enclosed space open to the public (e.g. shops, restaurants (unless seated and eating) hotels, hospitals etc.)
    • In any indoor space such as the meditation room where people who are not from the same household mix
    • In any outdoor space where it is not possible to observe social distancing of 1.5m (e.g. crowded streets, concerts, public demonstrations etc.)
    • On all forms of public transport including planes, trains, trams, buses and metro, as well as all transport stations, platforms and airports.

We will be asking for you to bring enough face coverings for the duration of the retreat. If you are exempt from wearing a face-covering for medical reasons, we ask that you notify us at the time of booking by sending an email to [email protected]

Question: What if the situation changes?

We are constantly monitoring the situation: if the silent retreat is cancelled due to the virus we will refund deposits/fees to participants. We would aim to do this with adequate notice.

If you find it necessary to cancel your booking due to covid-19 related reasons, a full refund of any deposit/fees will be available.

Please note refunds do not include any travel costs you may have incurred or costs from required quarantine or isolation on the return home. In all other circumstances, our standard cancellation terms and conditions apply.

Question: What happens if I develop symptoms whilst on retreat or get pinged by a COVID-19 App?

Although normally we would discourage the use of mobile telephones whilst on retreat, within the current pandemic conditions it may be necessary to check for your home countries Test and Trace messages once a day. If you wish, you can discuss with the teacher how to do this in a way that will be respecting and honouring your intention to be on retreat.

If you are double-vaccinated and receive notification whilst you're here, we'll ask you to do a Lateral Flow Test before attending the next session.

    • If you develop any of the main symptoms during a retreat you will be asked to self-isolate and return home as soon as possible.

The main symptoms of Coronavirus/COVID-19 are:

    • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
    • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
    • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

If you think you might be developing any of these symptoms prior to the retreat please do not travel. We are unable to offer refunds to people who have to leave a retreat early.

We are aware that this has been a difficult and stressful time for many and we are looking forward to welcoming you back to the Hotel Tossal dÁltea. Our hope is that the silent retreat will offer a much needed opportunity for contemplation and personal reflection to help you find balance in the extraordinary times we are living in, as well as opportunities for connection with each other and with the stunning Mediterranean coastline and mountains that the Costa Blanca is famous for.

Thank you for your help in co-creating as supportive and safe a retreat environment as possible, under the COVID-19 regulations that may still be in place during your stay with us.
